Sherry Brier – become the hero of your own life

Meet Sherry Brier

My name is Sherry Brier. I am more than a dance teacher: my mission through dance has been to inspire and motivate women and girls to be the heroes of their own lives.

What business are you currently running?

WomenRockProject™ is the largest video library of women’s wisdom to inspire, educate, and motivate you. Video clips for, by, and about women offer personal revelations of women living passionate, joyful lives.

These stories will give you the courage to become the hero of your own life so together we can change the world.

Assuming you are now in “Your Next Chapter”, what led you here? Was there an internal discontent or an external issue you felt strongly about that prompted a change in direction?

After over 30 years of teaching dance every day, I could barely get up the steps to my studio – I needed a hip replacement. I didn’t know whether I would walk again let alone teach and dance with my performing company after the surgery.

Pacing back and forth on my deck with a walker, I wondered how I would be able to continue to be a champion for beauty and a warrior against wasted potential.

Through my recovery, I created WomenRockProject.com, the largest online video library of women’s wisdom, that features a new woman each week that has dared to live life to the fullest.

Likewise, my recently published 4th book, DARING, DAZZLING, DIVINE: Secrets to Rock Your Life is a treasure chest of real women’s lives, stories, hopes, and dreams that speaks to the strength & beauty of all women.

What did you find most challenging about getting started/moving in a new direction?

I have always gone with the flow as an artist. I love change so the most difficult part of my hip injury was being stuck and not being able to motivate women and girls in my studio.

What have you found most fulfilling?

I founded and direct Inner Rhythm Movement Arts Institute in Marin County, California, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary.

I have taught many forms of transformational and world dance including Egyptian Temple Dance, improvisational movement, ritual and trance dance, belly dance, flamenco and various other ethnic forms.

I choreographed and directed five dance companies and produced two dance concerts yearly.

Have you experienced self-doubt? What causes it to flare and how do you work through it when it hits?

Even though I have periodically experienced self-doubt, as an artist it is not something that stays with me for long.

I tend to like change – I find it exciting and self-doubt is just an opportunity to make things better.

How do you feel you have grown since you started?

Women Rock Project has grown into the largest video library of women’s wisdom – to date there are over 500 videos.

Have you developed any particular habits/strategies that facilitate getting things done in your business?

I have always been an independent person, so whatever needed to be done, I did it myself.

I have come to realize that reaching out to other people, perhaps sooner than I did, would have translated to more success.

Why do you feel women in the 40’s and beyond make fabulous entrepreneurs?

I not only began teaching dance late but also learning dance late. While I had always found it beautiful, I was complaining that I was too old, too fat, and too clumsy to become the beautiful dancer I hoped to be.

In spite of this, I not only learned and embraced dance, I opened up a studio where I could motivate other people that thought like I did to dance their dreams out. If I could do it at any age, then anyone can do it.

What would you say to other women who are standing on the edge of their own Next Chapter, not sure if they can take the leap?

One of my mantras is run, run, run, jump! They need to just go for it.

Holding on is a greater punishment than letting go and making some mistakes.
